High-Tech navigation tools used for Marlin Project

September 07, 1999

John E. Chance & Associates recently utilized an array of high-tech navigation tools for the BP Amoco-operated Marlin project. During the operation, Chance used its 3-D virtual reality visualization software, STARFIX.Hydrovista to display the 3-D rendered shape of the project. It proved useful in assisting navigation of the Marlin TLP to the production site in Viosca Knoll Block 915 in the Gulf of Mexico. Because of clearance limits going through the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, the project was especially challenging.

This new software combined with Chance’s navigation and survey software, STARFIX.NAV®, provided Marlin project personnel with the information required to avoid subsurface hazards. The tugboats employed for the TLP tow-out navigated the channel using DRONE™, a simple navigation system for remote vessels that was also developed by CHANCE.
